Constellation Brands, the maker of Modelo and Corona beer, announced a $100 million investment over five years aimed at supporting barley growers across Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota, addressing mounting cost pressures that have shrunk the region’s acreage devoted to the crop.
Barley serves as a primary ingredient in Constellation’s flagship products. The company’s commitment targets a sector facing headwinds from elevated input costs, volatile weather, and shifting farm economics. Montana’s barley acreage has contracted sharply, falling from more than two million acres historically to around 800,000 acres today, according to industry figures.
Farmer Perspective on Support
Lee Dahlman, a fourth-generation barley farmer in Montana whose great-grandfather homesteaded the operation more than a century ago, serves on the Montana Wheat and Barley board. Dahlman characterized the investment as meaningful encouragement for an industry under strain. “Number one—it gives hope, and that’s what we all want. We always want hope and we always want next year,” Dahlman told KTVH. He added that Montana remains committed to barley production, emphasizing regional growers’ dedication to the crop.
Challenges Facing Barley Farmers
Operators across the northern plains have contended with rising fertilizer and diesel expenses alongside climbing machinery costs. Changing weather patterns have compounded these financial pressures, making investment in production stability increasingly difficult for individual operations.
The scale of acreage decline underscores the urgency of industry support. A 60 percent reduction in Montana barley plantings over recent decades reflects cumulative economic and environmental stress on farming enterprises dependent on stable commodity prices and predictable growing conditions.
Investment Details Pending
Constellation Brands has not yet detailed how the $100 million commitment will be distributed or the specific mechanisms through which barley farmers will benefit. The company’s announcement signals recognition that supply-chain stability for its core agricultural ingredient requires direct engagement with producers facing operational challenges.
The investment comes amid broader discussions about agricultural resilience in the region, particularly as wildfires continue to disrupt rural Montana communities and farming operations. Supporting primary agricultural sectors through direct capital commitment represents one approach to sustaining rural economies and securing commodity supplies for major manufacturers.
Details on application processes, eligibility criteria, and fund allocation are expected to follow as Constellation Brands develops implementation plans with grower organizations and regional stakeholders across the three-state area.
