The federal government has approved disaster assistance for two Montana tribal nations — the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux tribes and the Crow tribe — following severe hail and wind storms that swept the state in December 2025 and caused millions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses.
The approved funding opens access to grants covering temporary housing and repair costs, as well as loans to help residents and business owners recover from uninsured property losses. Federal cleanup and recovery efforts are also authorized under the disaster declaration.
Alongside the funding, the IRS has extended tax filing deadlines for individuals and businesses affected by the storms. Impacted filers now have until September 28 to submit their returns.
The storm damage and subsequent recovery process add to a pattern of disaster-related strain on Montana communities. Federal Small Business Administration disaster loans are also available for businesses in Yellowstone, Big Horn, and Carbon counties following separate weather events earlier this year.
Tribal community members and business owners seeking assistance should contact relevant federal agencies to confirm eligibility and begin the application process ahead of applicable deadlines.
