Mithril Mining Corp. has entered a sponsored research agreement with Montana Technological University to conduct a two-year tungsten exploration program at the Calvert Mine in Beaverhead County, the company announced. The partnership pairs a working mineral exploration firm with Montana Tech’s Department of Geological Engineering to advance both commercial prospecting and student training at one of the region’s historically significant ore sites.
A Historic Site Gets a Modern Look
The Calvert Mine has a substantial production history, having yielded more than 217,000 tons of ore over its operational life, with historical grades averaging roughly 1.10% tungsten trioxide. Despite that record, no modern integrated geophysical survey has ever been completed across the project area — a gap the new research program is designed to fill.
The two-year program, which runs through May 14, 2028, will employ drone- and ground-based geophysical surveys alongside borehole measurements and both 2D and 3D geological modeling. The combination of aerial and ground-level data collection is expected to give researchers a far more detailed picture of the deposit’s subsurface structure than older methods could provide.
Academic Partnership at the Core
Montana Tech graduate student Hunter Brimhall will carry out much of the fieldwork, under the supervision of Xiaobing Zhou, a professor in the university’s Geological Engineering department. The arrangement is designed to give Brimhall direct, hands-on experience with exploration methods that are increasingly in demand across the mining industry.
Montana Tech, located in Butte, has long been one of the nation’s leading institutions for mining and geological engineering education. The Mithril agreement fits a broader pattern of Montana’s mineral-sector employers working directly with the university to build a pipeline of trained graduates familiar with current technology.
Tungsten’s Growing Strategic Importance
The timing of the project reflects heightened national interest in securing domestic supplies of critical minerals. Tungsten has been designated a critical mineral by the federal government because of its essential role in defense applications, aerospace components, energy systems, and advanced manufacturing. The metal’s hardness and heat resistance make it difficult to substitute in many high-performance industrial uses.
Much of the world’s tungsten supply is concentrated in China, a dependence that policymakers in Washington have flagged as a supply-chain vulnerability. Domestic exploration projects like the Calvert Mine initiative have drawn increased attention as the Trump administration has pushed to expand American production of minerals deemed strategically significant.
What Comes Next
With the research agreement now in place, Mithril Mining and Montana Tech will move forward with survey work at the Beaverhead County site over the next two years. The geophysical data and modeling generated through the program are expected to inform Mithril’s longer-term decisions about the mine’s development potential.
For Montana Tech, the agreement adds a live exploration project to its graduate curriculum at a moment when demand for geoscience and mining engineering professionals remains strong across the Western United States. The Calvert Mine work gives students exposure to the full arc of a mineral exploration effort — from initial survey design through data interpretation and three-dimensional deposit modeling.
Beaverhead County, Montana’s largest county by land area, has a long history of mineral extraction, and the region’s geology continues to attract exploration interest. Whether the new survey data will support expanded development at the Calvert Mine remains to be seen, but the research program positions Mithril to make that assessment with far more precision than historical records alone would allow.
