State officials and agriculture industry representatives called the consolidation a significant step forward for Montana’s farming and ranching sectors.
Three Labs, One Building
The new facility houses the Montana State University Wool Lab, the Montana Department of Livestock’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, and the Montana Department of Agriculture’s Agriculture Analytics Lab. Each serves a distinct but related role in supporting the state’s agricultural economy.
The Wool Lab provides testing and research services focused on sheep producers, supporting flock health and efforts to improve wool quality statewide. The Agriculture Analytics Lab tests feed, fertilizer, and groundwater samples, and monitors for pesticide contamination in groundwater. Its director, Jona Verreth, described its consumer protection function in straightforward terms: “We ensure producers are getting what they are buying and ensuring feed and fertilizer manufacturers play on a level playing field.”
The Veterinary Diagnostic Lab identifies and monitors animal diseases, serving veterinarians, livestock producers, and wildlife managers across Montana. It also tests eggs and milk to ensure they are free of zoonotic diseases. Lab director Greg Juda explained the stakes: “Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans or humans to animals.”
That testing function carries particular weight at a moment when Montana’s dairy industry is facing heightened regulatory scrutiny. Recent state inspections at a Billings milk processing facility uncovered non-compliant equipment, and consumer concern around raw milk production in the state has grown following a separate pasteurized milk spoilage incident. The expanded capabilities of the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab could play a direct role in addressing those ongoing concerns.

State officials said the consolidation does more than simply relocate existing operations. The shared building is expected to expand the research and testing capacity of all three labs, with cross-disciplinary work becoming easier when teams operate in the same space. The facility’s location on the MSU campus also creates more hands-on learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in agriculture, veterinary science, and related fields.
Montana’s agricultural economy depends heavily on livestock, and the coordination between animal health surveillance and food safety testing has long been an area where state agencies have worked in parallel. Housing those functions together is intended to sharpen that coordination.
