Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Terpsma was killed Friday night after being shot while responding to a disturbance call in Montana. Terpsma was 28.

The call came at 8:23 p.m. An Eureka police officer was also struck by gunfire and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Merrisa Walker, 46, was shot and killed at the scene of the original call, while a juvenile girl was injured, treated and released.

Pursuit and Surrender

Matthew David Dye, 50, fled the scene with a 7-year-old girl, according to the provided facts. Flathead County sheriff’s deputies pursued him after he left the area.

Dye fired at deputies during the pursuit, disabling two patrol cars. He later surrendered at a roadblock on Highway 93.

Dye will be charged in Terpsma’s death and is scheduled for an initial hearing in Lincoln County Justice Court sometime next week.

Investigation Underway

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short said the community and the Sheriff’s Office were grieving Terpsma’s death. “We are all deeply affected by the loss of Deputy Terpsma,” Short said.

The Montana attorney general said Terpsma “made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.”
