A state task force charged with assessing Montana’s shooting facility needs convened Monday at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks headquarters in Helena, spending the full day moving from information-gathering into the early stages of drafting formal recommendations.

The Montana State Shooting Facilities and Improvements Development and Oversight Task Force opened at 9 a.m. and ran through 4 p.m. Members heard reports from four subcommittees covering public relations, shooting complexes, funding, and lands before turning to the work of shaping recommendations from that collected information.

Scope and Deadline

The task force is responsible for identifying where shooting facility needs exist across the state and recommending how facilities and improvements should be developed, located, and administered. Its final recommendations are due by June 30, 2027, which would position the work to inform the 2027 legislative session.

Monday’s meeting was open to in-person attendance at the Helena headquarters and available via Zoom, with a public online feedback session also offered during the day.
