Democrat Sam Forstag raised more than $2.3 million from July through September in Montana’s western congressional district, nearly $1 million more than Republican Aaron Flint, according to the latest Federal Election Commission filings.
Forstag’s fundraising brought his total receipts since entering the race to $3.69 million. About $1.8 million came from individual donors.
The Cook Political Report shifted the race from “lean Republican” to “toss-up” on Friday. The change came shortly after President Donald Trump traveled to Montana to campaign for Flint.
Flint Holds More Cash
Although Flint raised $1.34 million during the same reporting period, the veteran and radio talk show host ended September with more cash available for the campaign. His account held more than $1 million, compared with $855,807.18 for Forstag.
Flint also benefited from substantially greater outside spending. Independent expenditures supporting his campaign totaled about $1.2 million, while roughly $250,000 was spent independently in support of Forstag.
Most of the outside spending supporting Forstag came from the Progressive Turnout Project, a political action committee that contacts voters on behalf of Democratic candidates.
Nearly half of the outside spending backing Flint came from American Mission, a PAC connected to the Leading the Future political network. Other groups spending in support of Flint included Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen’s Leadership in Action PAC, U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke’s Seal PAC, Zinke’s Special Operations for America PAC and Make Montana Great.
Senate Fundraising Totals Differ
Republican Senate candidate Kurt Alme reported $880,805.03 raised by his campaign during the period. Independent candidate Seth Bodnar’s campaign reported more than $1.4 million.
Bodnar’s campaign said that figure exceeded the combined fundraising of his two opponents. A Bodnar spokesperson, Kelly Webster, said the campaign had support from Republicans, Democrats and independents.
Alme’s broader fundraising total includes money collected through three joint fundraising committees. Alme Victory raised $556,050 on his behalf, Team Alme raised $420,147.95, and Accountable Leaders for Montana’s Excellence raised $30,774.06.
Including those committees, Alme’s fundraising for the period exceeded $1.8 million as September ended.
