Montana Governor Greg Gianforte concluded a strategic trade mission to Sri Lanka with high-level meetings in Colombo on October 9. The discussions centered on expanding economic partnerships and strengthening defense cooperation between the state and the South Asian nation.
Economic and Industrial Cooperation
Gianforte met with Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe to explore opportunities in advanced manufacturing and investment. A primary focus of their conversation was potential collaboration in Sri Lanka’s vein graphite industry, a sector relevant to critical mineral supply chains.
The governor also held talks with Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe regarding trade avenues for Montana agricultural producers. They discussed possible partnerships involving industrial hemp and the textile and apparel sectors, aiming to open new markets for state businesses.
Defense and Security Ties
In a separate meeting, Gianforte spoke with Deputy Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara about the relationship between Sri Lanka and the Montana National Guard. The dialogue covered disaster-response training, maritime and air security, and port resilience. They also addressed further cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Mission Context
The meetings marked the final day of a broader trade mission that included stops in India and Sri Lanka. Gianforte offered condolences for the lives lost in Cyclone Ditwah and commended the Sri Lankan government’s response efforts. The initiative sought to bolster both economic and security ties with regional partners.
