The MSU football program defeated Illinois State 35-34 in overtime during the championship game held in Nashville in January 2026. The Bobcats finished their title-winning season with a 14-2 record under head coach Brent Vigen.
Montana Delegation Celebrates Victory
U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Tim Sheehy and Congressman Troy Downing attended the White House recognition alongside Governor Gianforte and MSU President Brock Tessman. The ceremony underscored the football program’s prominence within Montana’s political and civic leadership.
Senator Daines remarked on the achievement, saying “What a day to be a Bobcat! Every player on this team has worked incredibly hard and it’s great to see their efforts paid off.” Governor Gianforte added that “Coach Viegen and the team continue to represent Montana well on the national stage, it’s a great day to be a Bobcat!”
Homecoming Recognition
The team had already been celebrated in Montana following their championship. Governor Gianforte hosted the Bobcats at the state Capitol in January, and he declared January 20, 2026, as Bobcat Day in Montana to mark the occasion.
The 2025-2026 championship represents a milestone for the program, which had not won a national title since 1984. The squad’s performance this season drew widespread attention to Montana State athletics and the university’s standing within collegiate football.
The White House visit reflects broader recognition of the team’s accomplishment across federal and state leadership. Senator Daines, who holds rare dual appointments to the Senate Finance and Appropriations committees, and other members of Montana’s delegation used the occasion to acknowledge the players’ dedication and the program’s success on a national stage.
