Missoula College and the University of Montana Office of Health Research and Partnership will use a $2.9 million award from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration to broaden nursing-training options statewide.

The grant funds growth of Missoula College’s pathway for licensed practical nurses seeking registered-nurse credentials. It also supports the launch of an Allied Health-to-RN Bridge program.

Bridge program serves experienced medical workers

The new program is intended for paramedics, advanced emergency medical technicians, military medics and medical assistants. Eligible students can work toward an associate degree in nursing, which would allow them to pursue registered nurse licensure.

Instruction will be available online, while clinical education can take place in students’ home communities. The program will also award academic credit for qualifying previous education and experience.

Missoula College will work with health care facilities to establish paid apprenticeships. The expanded programs are intended to strengthen Montana’s nursing workforce in rural areas and communities with limited medical services.
