The Valley County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information after someone allegedly fired at a BNSF Railway locomotive Tuesday night near Tampico Road and North Tampico Road.

BNSF employees notified dispatch at approximately 10:20 p.m. Oct. 20 after witnessing the incident. The train was stationary when a four-door pickup with overhead lighting stopped on Tampico Road.

A person in the pickup reportedly directed a spotlight toward the train crew. Crew members then saw a muzzle flash and smoke before the pickup turned around and left.

Deputies identified the location where the vehicle had stopped and recovered one shell casing. They also collected additional evidence, which will be processed by the Montana Crime Lab.

The train continued west and is scheduled for inspection in Havre for possible evidence and damage.

Authorities are offering a reward for information that leads to the person’s identification and arrest. Callers may remain anonymous by contacting Valley County dispatch at 406-228-4333 and referencing case number 202604514.
