A deepening drought across Montana is straining rural water supplies, with wells running dry in and around Fairfield and drillers pushing hundreds of feet underground to find reliable groundwater. The problem is drawing attention from well contractors, local officials, and the state’s natural resources agency.
Wells Coming Up Dry
Patrick Bronson, who operates 406 Water Wells, has watched drought conditions affect the region’s water table in real time. He recently drilled roughly 400 feet into the Madison aquifer searching for water — a significant depth that underscores how difficult the situation has become. New wells in parts of Fairfield and surrounding areas are simply not producing.
“With the drought, it’s greatly influenced their wells and they’re drying up,” Bronson said.
The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation requires property owners to file a 602I form before any drilling attempt begins, adding a procedural layer to an already stressful process for rural families and businesses scrambling to maintain water access.
Fairfield’s Seasonal Vulnerability
Fairfield sits in an especially precarious position because its groundwater depends heavily on seasonal recharge from irrigation canals. The shallow wells common to the area — many reaching only 30 to 40 feet — are closely tied to the Greenfields Irrigation District canal system. When those canals are running, the groundwater rebounds. When they stop, the water largely disappears.
That cycle leaves Fairfield vulnerable in spring and fall, when irrigation is not active and aquifer levels drop. The town drilled four test wells in an attempt to identify new water sources, and all four came up dry.
Mayor Loren Tacke acknowledged that even temporary fixes may only delay the inevitable. “In the fall, in the spring, we’re going to run into the same exact problem,” he said.
In the meantime, families, schools, and businesses throughout the affected area have resorted to rationing water or piecing together workarounds to keep daily operations going.
Contested Rights, Receding Aquifers
Water rights across Montana are a longstanding source of legal and political tension, and the current drought is sharpening those disputes. As aquifers recede, the question of who holds priority rights to dwindling groundwater becomes more pressing — particularly in agricultural communities like Fairfield where both irrigation and municipal needs compete for the same sources.
The situation reflects a broader pattern playing out across the state, where water availability is increasingly shaped by drought cycles, seasonal recharge patterns, and the limits of aging infrastructure. Legal fights over water quality and permitting are already escalating in Montana, adding another dimension to resource pressures that communities are struggling to manage.
Fairfield Maps a Way Forward
Fairfield is not waiting for conditions to improve on their own. Town leaders are partnering with engineers to conduct a comprehensive water study aimed at understanding the full scope of the problem and identifying sustainable long-term options.
Proposed solutions under consideration include drilling deeper wells to reach more stable aquifer layers, entering agreements to source water from neighboring communities, and expanding storage capacity to buffer against dry-season shortfalls. Each option carries its own costs and complications, and the engineering study is intended to help officials evaluate which approaches are feasible given Fairfield’s geology and budget.
How quickly those options can be put into practice will depend in part on state permitting timelines and available funding — factors outside local control.

Fairfield’s predicament is unlikely to be unique. Across Montana, communities that rely on shallow aquifers or canal-dependent recharge face similar exposure as drought conditions persist. Montana’s fast-growing economy is adding residential and commercial water demand in many areas at the same time that natural supply is under pressure.
State officials and water managers will face increasing pressure to help small communities navigate the intersection of drought, aging infrastructure, and contested water rights — a challenge that is likely to intensify in coming years rather than ease.
