President Donald Trump announced plans for a new military testing facility in Montana during a campaign rally in Kalispell on Wednesday. The proposed “super range” would allow the Department of Defense to evaluate advanced weapons systems, including hypersonic technology capable of traveling five times the speed of sound.
“Montana will continue to play a critical role in the development and testing of cutting-edge military technology, and for that we have a little breaking news,” Trump said at the event.
The president credited Montana’s Republican leadership for supporting the initiative. He specifically named Sen. Tim Sheehy, Sen. Steve Daines, and Gov. Greg Gianforte as key figures who advocated for the project. The Pentagon has previously identified autonomous systems and electronic warfare capabilities as strategic priorities, areas that would likely benefit from expanded testing infrastructure.
Trump did not provide details regarding the specific location within the state, the projected cost, or a timeline for when operations might begin. The announcement came as he campaigned in Montana’s 1st Congressional District to support Republican candidates Aaron Flint and Kurt Alme ahead of upcoming elections.
